FOOD FOR THOUGHT: In the non-Western world, dogs and cats are still fed real food, cooked or raw…believe it or not.
"We come from a country where there was no commercial pet food. We fed our companion pets real meat, fish, rice, potatoes, vegetables, and table scraps. Our pets were hardy. We saw a vet only for one-time rabies shots, accidents, and to put down a pet, mostly due to old age. When we came to the US, we bought into pet food companies' marketing and unfortunately, our conventional vet's advice to feed dry food. Woody eventually led us to believe otherwise."
- Enrique Palma, co-owner

Cooked or Raw?
Dog and cat’s bodies are designed to eat and digest raw food. It is what they would eat in their natural habitat and before the invention of pet “fast food”. Our pets’ stomachs are much more acidic and they secrete a higher level of digestive enzymes which creates a hostile environment for bacteria. Some holistic vets say that cooking alters both the physical and chemical makeup of the food. Cooked meat is not as “bio-available” due to the fact that:
But, some holistic vets prefer cooked food because
The bottom line is the decision to feed raw or cooked depends on what you as a pet parent believe or are comfortable with. Either way, feeding real food to your pet will bring them health, vitality, balance and longevity.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Vet school students are taught pet nutrition by pet food company representatives or professors funded by pet food companies (90% admitted to being funded by pet food companies in a 2009 Consumer Reports article). Ayayay, sounds like the big pharma-doctor relationships all over again!
